Generally it is not possible to stay in Tibet once your tour finishes . Also you are not allowed to visit the places which are not mentioned in the itinerary . But in practice it is possible to do the both with some preplanning . If you wish to stay in Tibet even after your tour finishes, you should request for a travel permit that is few days longer than your tour. Then you are allowed to stay the extra days until the permission lasts. For example if you have 6 day permit for Lhasa but your tour finishes in 3 days , you can stay in Lhasa for those extra three days ( not more ) and can visit places in Lhasa on your own too. But you can not go out of Lhasa even if you have 3 extra days of permit because you do not have permit to go out of Lhasa. If you want to go out of Lhasa in those three days, you need to get separate permit from local authorities ( your travel agent does this for you ) to visit that particular place. In practice , getting this permit to visit this extra place is not easy ( though it is possible ) . Please note that you require separate permits to visit different regions of Tibet besides the entry permit ( which is used just to enter Tibet) .
